An Unexpected Change of Plans
Family camping by the sea in Thailand was not our original plan. We first set out for a mountain campsite near Khao Khitchakut, but the protected route was closed for the season.
Our original destination looked perfect from a distance, but when we arrived, we learned that the area was still closed for its seasonal protection period. We could enjoy the panoramic view, but we could not continue to the campsite.
For a moment, the trip seemed to have ended before it had truly begun. Instead of returning home, however, we decided to search for another place. That unexpected decision led us toward the coast—and to a family camping night more memorable than the one we had planned.
The Road to Our First Destination
We drove toward the mountains with camping gear packed in the car and the family ready for a quiet night outdoors. The road became narrower and greener as we climbed higher, revealing peaceful valleys and distant mountain ridges along the way.
Everything seemed to be going according to plan—until we reached the entrance to our intended destination.
A Sacred Mountain Above Chanthaburi
Our first destination was near the trail leading to Khao Khitchakut, one of Chanthaburi’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage mountains. High on the mountain is Phra Bat Phluang, a sacred site where people travel to worship a revered footprint of the Buddha.
The summit stands more than 1,000 metres above sea level. Around the sacred footprint are unusual natural rock formations that have become connected with Buddhist legends and local beliefs. From the upper mountain, visitors can also look across the forested ranges and the distant landscape of Chanthaburi.
However, the route to the mountaintop is not normally open throughout the year. Access is mainly allowed during the annual pilgrimage season, while the mountain is closed at other times to protect the forest and natural environment. We had arrived outside that permitted period, so we could not continue toward the mountaintop or camp at our intended destination.
Although we were disappointed, we stopped to admire the wide panorama of mountains and forest. Standing below the sacred summit, we accepted that this journey would have to continue in another direction.
The Road Changed, but the Journey Continued
We could not reach the mountain campsite we had planned to visit, but the journey was not over. After taking one last look at the wide mountain panorama, we returned to the car and searched for another place to stay.
Instead of going home, we turned toward the coast. None of us knew exactly what the next campsite would be like, but that small change of direction soon led us to a beautiful hilltop overlooking the sea.
This unexpected change became the beginning of our family camping by the sea in Thailand.

Our change of plans led us to a beautiful campsite high above the coast. From the hillside, the sea stretched far into the distance, framed by green trees and the rugged shoreline below.
The disappointment of missing our first destination quickly faded. This new place felt peaceful and open, with a wide view of the water and enough space for the family to settle in comfortably.
As the afternoon light softened, we prepared the tent and arranged our camping table while waiting for sunset. The journey had not gone as planned, but it had brought us somewhere unexpectedly beautiful.
Sunset Over the Coast
As evening approached, the sky slowly changed above the sea. Soft golden light spread across the horizon, and the coastline below became quieter with every passing minute.
We stopped preparing for a while and simply watched the sun descend. The wide ocean, dark mountain silhouettes, and warm evening light made the unexpected campsite feel like the perfect destination after all.
This was not the place we had planned to visit, but the sunset made us forget the disappointment of the morning.

A Simple Family Camping Feast
As darkness settled over the coast, we gathered around the camping table for dinner. Thick slices of samgyeopsal sizzled on the grill, filling the cool evening air with a familiar and comforting aroma.
Cold beer, warm food, and an open view of the sea were all we needed. We talked without hurry, laughed about the change of plans, and enjoyed the kind of conversation that becomes possible when everyone steps away from daily routines.
The meal itself was simple, but the time together made it special. What had begun as a failed camping plan had turned into a warm family evening above the sea.
Rain During the Night
Sometime during the night, rain began to fall over the campsite. The sound of raindrops on the tent blended with the distant sea and gradually became part of the quiet camping night.
By morning, the dry ground had turned soft and muddy. The tent, ropes, and camping equipment were damp, and packing everything required more care than usual.
Even so, there was no reason to hurry. We slowly cleared the table, folded the wet equipment, and prepared to leave together.
Leaving After the Rain
By the time everything was packed, the campsite looked very different from the peaceful place we had enjoyed the evening before. The ground was wet and muddy, and traces of the night’s rain remained on the tent and camping equipment.
We loaded the last bags into the car, checked the site once more, and prepared to leave. There was no frustration or regret—only the quiet satisfaction of having shared another memorable night together.
The car slowly moved away from the campsite, leaving the sea, the wet hillside, and the muddy ground behind. Our original plan had failed, but the journey gave us something better: a beautiful sunset, a warm family dinner, and a story we would remember long after the rain had dried.
Sometimes the best family memories begin when the original plan changes.
In the end, our family camping by the sea in Thailand became more meaningful because nothing happened exactly as planned.
