Sai Ngam Phimai is a peaceful lakeside garden and ancient banyan grove located just outside the historic center of Phimai.
Before leaving Phimai, Won Cub Life made one final stop at this quiet park, only a short distance from Prasat Phimai Historical Park.
After walking among the massive stone towers of Prasat Phimai, this quiet garden felt completely different. Shaded paths followed the water, wooden bridges crossed the pond, and small pavilions stood among the trees.
A Garden Shaped by Water and Shade
The park unfolds gently around the pond. Wooden walkways, small bridges, and open pavilions create a calm place where local families can rest away from the heat.
Unlike the monumental stone architecture of Prasat Phimai, Sai Ngam offers a softer side of the town—one shaped by water, shade, and slow-moving afternoon light.
Royal Memories at Sai Ngam
Sai Ngam is more than a peaceful public garden. Its history is closely connected with Thailand’s royal family.
The place became widely known after a queen consort of King Rama V visited Phimai on 21 January 1911. Impressed by the beauty of the spreading banyan tree, she bestowed the name “Sai Ngam,” meaning “the beautiful banyan tree.”
Decades later, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX, visited Sai Ngam in 1955. Historic photographs displayed inside the park preserve memories of this royal visit.
The exhibition also includes a photograph of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the third child of King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit, further reflecting Sai Ngam’s continuing connection with the Thai royal family.
The Living Forest of a Single Banyan Tree
The true heart of Sai Ngam appears beneath its dense canopy. Long aerial roots descend from the branches, reach the ground, and slowly grow into new trunks.
Over many years, this natural process has created the impression of an entire forest. Yet the tangled roots, branches, and columns remain connected as one living organism.
Walking beneath them feels like entering a hidden green hall—cool, quiet, and protected from the bright tropical sun.
Beneath the Ancient Canopy
Inside the banyan grove, it becomes difficult to distinguish between the original trunk and the roots that later became new supports. They twist around one another, form natural corridors, and spread in every direction.
The grove feels both ancient and alive. Visitors walk beneath the branches while sunlight filters through small openings in the canopy, revealing the extraordinary strength and patience of nature.
A Quiet Walk Through Sai Ngam
The park is not large, but its atmosphere encourages visitors to slow down. The route passes beneath the banyan canopy, across wooden bridges, and along the edge of the pond.
For Won Cub Life, this was a gentle final moment in Phimai—a peaceful contrast to the monumental history and stone architecture of Prasat Phimai.

Sai Ngam was not a grand historical monument, yet it offered something equally memorable. Beneath the spreading banyan branches, history, nature, and everyday life quietly came together.
After exploring the magnificent stone sanctuary of Prasat Phimai, Won Cub Life ended the journey beside the still water and shaded paths of this old garden.
It was a gentle farewell to Phimai—before starting the engine and returning to the road once again.
